Journal 009 – My battery is low, and it’s getting dark..

My battery is low, and it’s getting dark..

Those were the final words of the Martian rover, Opportunity, affectionately known as ‘Oppy’

Multiple news agencies reported how Oppy fell silent in June 2018, after getting stuck in a massive dust storm. NASA beamed up hundreds of instructions to Oppy, all asking him to ‘phone home’, but nothing worked..

Oppy was pronounced dead in February 2019. He was only supposed to live on Mars for 90 days, but operated for more than 14 years!

He traversed more than 28 miles on the red planet. A record, of course

Here’s the thing:
One journalist, Jacob Margolis, tweeted his ‘translation’ of Oppy’s last transmission to Earth as ‘My battery is low, and it’s getting dark’

The phrase went viral as it struck a chord with people all over the world, inspiring a period of mourning, artwork, and tributes to the memory of Oppy

Etsy sold mugs, T-shirts and coasters, with Oppy’s ‘final words’ emblazoned on them. People had tattoos

Here’s the problem:
The story’s entirely true, but the words are entirely false

Ozan Varol, who spent 4 years in Oppy’s operations Team, says ‘the final code sent back to earth did include reports on power levels, and outside light readings, and more’

‘Nobody paused to ask, or contemplate, how does a remote-controlled space robot spit out fully formed English sentences, designed to tug at people’s heartstrings?’

Those words only happened in the mind of a clever journalist! Maybe the key is to be sceptical, and curious?

We hear ‘I already have an advisor who does my property tax’ which we interpret as, ‘OK, might be true, at some level, let’s see’
